Birds of a Feather is a small (3 condo-suites) purpose built 5 star B&B on the waterfront of the Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood which is in the westshore area of Victoria, BC. These suites are on the 2nd floor and separate from our home on the first floor.
The Opportunity
Rent is expensive in Victoria. Here is an opportunity to live rent free with your own room and full size ensuite bathroom on the first floor in our house while enjoying all of the ammenities of this stunning waterfront property. From December through March we operate our B&B in Thailand and you will have the place to yourself.
If you wish to fully immerse yourself in to all aspects of running this business over a few years you'll not only learn how to totally run a small business from A to Z but also be certified as an InnKeeper by us. Paphada is a former manager from a Best Western hotel in Thailand. Dieter is a director of the provincial InnKeepers Association, retired founder of Hyatt Legal Services Canada, co-founder of Q College and several tech companies and teaches InnKeeper courses here on location to aspiring InnKeepers.
Ideal Candidate
- A single person without dependants. (no couples)

- if you have web and social media skills great but also ok if you don't
InnKeeper Job Duties
- clean rooms
- prepare and serve breakfast
- process reservations
- gardening and groundskeeping
- shopping for grocceries
- herd sheep - just kidding LOL - our neighbours do that
- Optional: manage web site and social media (will train if you wish to learn this)
Renumeration
- free room
- wages to commensurate with your abilities, attitude and commitment
Our Situation
We love living here on the watefront and the lifestyle that comes with meeting and hosting a small number of guests at any given time. Our B&B is too small to hire someone full time yet too big to handle ourselves. We also like to travel a lot. Cleaning is the task that we most need help with. Hiring someone part-time to clean is difficult as they are on call and required mostly when we have check-outs. When we've hired people on this basis in the past most have proven unreliable, often just not showing up and without any notice.
We will also continue to use helpers (one at a time) from helpx.net who work in exchange for room and board, however, they typically only stay for a month as they are travelling. It is this model which has been very succesful that inspired us to offer this "live-in" position allowing us to offset our costs for a full time person using our facilities and save you rent you'd have to pay with "after-tax" earnings.
