The southern Gulf Islands are our backyard. All of the photos on this page are from our excursions. The Gulf Islands are the most visited region on Canada's west coast. Grouped closely to one another, over 200 islands with varied and stunning shorelines with protected passages such as the Pender island canal between north and south Pender Islands. National Geographic Traveler named the Gulf Islands one of the world’s best coastal destinations.
Some of the highlights include the small town of Ganges on Salt Spring Island home to the world famous market. The village of Fulford Harbour is well-known for Salt Spring's creative side with several artists’ studios and galleries, an organic café and bakery, a restaurant focusing on fresh west coast cuisine and Salt Spring Mercantile; a cafe and country store.
Picturesque Montague Harbour is in a sheltered inlet on Galliano Island with high mountain peaks. There is only boat access for hiking the Dionisio Point Perimeter Loop on Galiano Park. The sandstone sea caves on Galiano are among British Columbia’s most accessible. The shores of Galiano Island are lined with a network of sea caves that have been carved by nature into its soft sandstone, and the formations on the shore are incredible.
Miners Bay on Mayne Island is a quaint seaside village accessible in the renowned scenic Active Pass. The first Gaol (jail / lockup) in the Gulf islands was here and is now a historical building to visit.
Saturna Island has an amazing lamb roast every Canada Day. It also is home to Sage Hayward Vineyards where we can dock with the boat for tastings. Saturna also has beautiful sandstone sea caves as shown in the pictures above.
The Pender Canal spanning North and South Pender islands by a wooden bridge is a picturesque waterway to pass through on the way to Poets Cove in Bedwell Harbour on south Pender Island. There is a good restaurant here with an outdoor patio right on the water.
There are numerous lighthouses throughout the Gulf Islands including the oldest lighthouse on Canada's west coast, Fisgard Lighthouse and the 2nd oldest which is situated in Race Rocks Marine Park, a favourite habitat of California and Stellar sea lions, and the occasional Elephant Seal.
While we frequently encounter orcas, and humpback whales during our private boat charters we do not wish to go searching for whales, unless you wish to pay a $500 fuel surcharge. A more affordable option for those who's main goal is to go whale watching is found here. https://www.marineecotours.com/orca-whale-watching-victoria-bc
